FAQ's
Is the Course recognised? Yes. Australian Customs Notice ACN 2006/12 advised that the course was approved as a course of study for a broker's licence, and that My Freight Career Pty Ltd was both qualified and approved to deliver the course.
What is the duration of the course? We anticipate that students will complete the course in 18 - 24 months. However, as it is a Competency based course, some students may be able to complete it earlier if they can demonstrate Competency in a subject(s) at a faster rate.
What is the method of training? Training will be a blended approach with;
- face to face classroom technical training - ICS data entries using industry compliant software - access to the Australian Customs website for lodging "Entries" experience - workplace support via a My Freight Career Certificate IV Workplace Trainer and Assessor (where applicable)
How can the student access ICS and the Customs website in a classroom? My Freight Career will supply computer access to each student.
Does this mean the course is an on-line course? No. Each student will need to access learners guides and assessment tasks for each Unit of Competency (subject) and complete them as part of the learning strategy. Access to ICS and the Customs website is to be able to practice what is being taught.
What are the class sizes? We are limiting the number of students to 20. This ensures a higher level of learning outcomes and more personalized interaction between trainer and students.
How frequent are the classes? Classes will be twice weekly, each session of three hours duration. The number of classes (blocks) required for each subject will vary depending on the level of technical training required.
How much support will the student receive? As well as having access to a trainer during office hours, a trainer will be available online and where applicable and only for indentured trainees a follow up visit to the students' workplace to ensure the technical skills being developed in a classroom environment are being practically applied in the workplace. This will ensure true "competency".
Where will the training be conducted? At our Coward Street, Mascot facility. This is a brand new purpose built classroom for the Customs Broker course. Throughout 2010/11 we will roll out the program to other states based on demand.
Are there any student prerequisites? Ideally, students should be working in a customs related role or department and have 12 months experience in that role. Other criteria may be considered dependant on the number of applicants.
What recognition does a student get when completing the course of study? There are two main options for students to complete their studies. Either;
1- By successfully completing the minimum number of Units of Competency required (11), whereby students will receive a Statement of Attainment, or
2- By successfully completing additional industry related Units of Competency, whereby students will attain a Qualification. These additional units can be studied concurrently and will not affect the duration of the course completion.
Is there a benefit to employers for their employees completing the Qualification? Yes, both in financial support, and broader employability and skills knowledge. For those eligible employees, the employer may be eligible for Federal Government funding up to $4000 plus GST. The additional units of competency allow students to gain a holistic approach to the international logistics industry incorporating brokerage knowledge and forwarding knowledge - important factors in customer satisfaction, employee retention and career path planning.
What if students have already started the course with another training provider? Can they enroll with My Freight Career for the remaining subjects? Yes. My Freight Career will recognise any completed subjects provided by another Registered Training Organisation. Students will need to supply us with a Statement of Attainment from the training provider.
What is the cost? Listed below is the cost for each Unit of Competency. Students will be expected to pay for a term load which will comprise of two or three units. Fees are payable prior to the commencement of each term.

Will students be offered Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)? Yes, on a case by case basis. RPL assesses the skills and knowledge of a student no matter how when or where the learning occurred. If a student is assessed as "competent" in a subject(s), there is no need for the student to complete further studies in that applicable subject(s).
For further information regarding the RPL process and costs, please contact our office to arrange an RPL application form.
Will students still need to undertake any external courses or participate in further study at additional expense before sitting the National Exam, which is the current practice? No. Students will be robustly assessed at the completion of each Unit of Competency. The assessment process is a critical and significant component of the training program. If a successful assessment is achieved and the student deemed "competent" at the completion of each unit of competency, then they have the required skills to meet the national standard. My Freight Career has always applied this philosophy diligently, and this is the same philosophy that will be applied to students participating in our Customs Broker course of study.
We believe that the materials, student support, coupled with our training and assessing model will enable realistic feedback to students as to their reaching "competency" and being ready to sit the National Exam.
